Why do we need Vitamin D?

Let's talk about the science, and the ways to prevent deficiency

There have been multiple articles surfacing recently about the role of Vitamin D in health and well-being. And while Vitamin D3 has always been crucial for human health, it’s really come under the spot-light during lockdown and isolation.

Dr Harry says, “the long-term consequences of Vitamin D deficiency include an increased risk of osteoporosis and cancer, but also decreased life expectancy.”

Most people, when they think of Vitamin D, automatically associate it with time spent in the sun. This is true, but it’s not always possible all year around. More time indoors in the winter months, or less time in sun exposure due to sun safety (which is needed in Australia!) means a higher risk of developing Vitamin D deficiency.

So why IS Vitamin D so important?

Dr Harry explains, “Vitamin D basically has one function in the body, but it’s a big one!  It enables the absorption of calcium in the gut. Vitamin D deficiency equates to inadequate calcium absorption.”

Calcium plays an enormous part in human health, which is why, from a young age, we are told to consume sources of it, like having a glass of milk or a piece of cheese, and now in a more plant-based society, through other means. Calcium is critical for the normal function of muscles, nerves, the immune system and the brain.

Since the body cannot tolerate low calcium, it has developed a very efficient way of finding it when dietary calcium absorption is inadequate - it takes it from the bones!  This is why low vitamin D (or low calcium) leads to brittle bones - otherwise known as osteopaenia, or osteoporosis if it’s severe.  Osteoporosis is very common and is best avoided by developing higher bone density before it’s too late.

Osteoporosis is serious. People with the condition are prone to:

#1 Crush fractures of the spine

#2 Fractures of the hips and long bones

#3 Reduced mobility, quality of life and a shorter life span

So how can we avoid deficiency and get our required Vitamin D recommendation?

#1 If you’re worried, go to your GP and get checked out!

#2 Get outdoors in full sun exposure, for 10 minutes in the summer, and at least 30 minutes in the winter.

#3 Consume Vitamin D. There are many forms of consumable Vitamin D, but we think ours is the best! It’s 100% plant-based, tastes amazing, and comes in the form of a super-convenient soft mist minty breath spray - no pills!
